Part of the fun in preparing for a new baby's arrival is decorating the nursery. Window treatments contribute greatly to the feel of a room. Choosing curtains for the nursery can be an very exciting process. When looking for the best curtains for your needs, you should consider various features of the different curtains that could work best for you. After all, your children are going to spend a lot of time in the room.

The way that it looks can have a large impact on their memories of living at home with you. One of the things that you need to put in the nursery is a nice set of curtains. Unless you want solid color panels, you may need to purchased sufficient drapery fabric by the yard to match your crib set at the time of purchase. It would be terrible to have your crib decorated beautifully and have to settle for less than fabulous, plain cotton nursery curtains.

Three different things must be considered when you are choosing the right curtains. First, you need to look at the walls. These will be right next to the cloth, so it is beneficial to have the right combination of colors. Everyone will see this contrast more than anything else. You should either choose the same color as the walls – though this can be boring in some cases – or you should choose a complimentary color. Use a kitchen knife to slice circular sections of styrofoam fun noodles normally meant to be used in a swimming pool. String these foam circles together to create a colorful tieback necklace. Purchase ready made window treatments for a planned nursery with a specific matched theme. Or if you prefer the nursery curtains differ slightly from the baby bedding, pick a fabric with a dominant color from the themed pattern and create simple curtains. Transform simple sheers by hand embroidering the alphabet using two or three contrasting thread colors. Create a monochromatic look in the same manner with matching embroidery thread. Cut circles out of classic gingham fabric and use a satin stitch on the sewing machine to attach to front of sheers.

Curtains thickness

The other thing that you will want to consider would be the thickness of the nursery curtains – there's no point buying thin unlined curtains – they will let too much light through in summer and too much heat out in winter. Of course you want your curtains to blend perfectly.

Leaving windows uncovered might be fine in every other room, but nursery curtains are not only decorative; they are practically an essential. When it comes to getting your baby to sleep soundly in the bright light of day you will quickly realize the importance of a good set of blinds or curtains.

You should also consider how well you need the curtains to block out light and cold from the window they are covering. They keep the nursery dark enough for sleep and help out on expensive air conditioning costs in the summer.
This combination of kids curtains and blinds not only looks great, but helps me to control the amount of light in the baby’s bedroom. I also believe that it makes the room more comfortable as far as temperature is concerned. Before I got the light blocking shades, the western facing room was much warmer than other parts of our house. To get the baby’s room cool in the summer, the rest of the house would be freezing.

You should also consider how well you need the curtains to block out light and cold

Babies do get older and may evenually be able to reach the nursery curtains to bring them down. We recommend buying curtains that are not too long so that the baby can't pull on them when they are learning to walk.
You will not want :
- floor length, trailing curtains pooling or lying in a puddle on the floor that baby might try to pull up on
- long cords within baby’s reach
- loose hardware, holdbacks or curtain rods that could fall on your child
If you plan on using the curtains once your child is able to move about the room, then you should consider safety features before choosing curtains.
